Their own door.

Cut into the glass, not bolted to it. Fitted once, by a glazier, and it stays with the house.

Not sure about your glass?

Hold a coin flat against the pane and look at its reflection. One reflection means a single sheet. Two reflections, with a gap between them, means a sealed double glazed unit.

Glass, cut once. The door clamps through the pane and sits flush in it, so the window goes on being a window.

Nothing is screwed into the joinery, nothing bolted to the frame. The glass itself holds the door, in panes from 3 mm to 32 mm, from an old single sheet to a modern sealed unit. The hole is cut before the glass is toughened, so it is planned rather than improvised. From then on the door can be changed in ten minutes, by you, with no glazier and no new glass.

The flap is UV stabilised polycarbonate. Sunlight does not yellow it, cloud it, or turn it brittle. Small magnets return it to closed every time, calibrated light enough that a cat never hesitates at it. The dial locks four ways: in, out, both, or neither, so you decide what the door does at three in the morning. Designed in New Zealand, and built so the hole in your glass is the last one that window will ever need.

Answers

What people ask before they commit.

Can a pet door go into double glazing?

Yes, and the trade often gets this wrong. A finished sealed unit cannot be drilled, because breaking the seal lets the argon out and the unit fogs. A glazier instead orders a new sealed unit with the round hole already cut, before the panes are toughened and assembled. Our Maxi Dual Glaze takes units to 28 mm and the Dogwalk Medium to 32 mm.

Can toughened or laminated glass be cut?

Not once processed. Toughened glass shatters if cut, and laminated glass will not core cleanly through the interlayer. The hole goes into the float glass first and the pane is toughened after. In practice your glazier orders a replacement pane with the cut-out specified, usually two to four weeks.

How do I find out how thick my glass is?

Look at the spacer bar on a double glazed unit, which often carries the thickness. Or hold a coin flat against the pane and look at the edge reflection: one reflection means a single pane, two separated reflections mean a sealed unit. Or open the door and measure the glass edge. Still unsure, send us a photograph of the edge and we will tell you.

What does it cost to have one fitted?

The door is the small part. Fitted, the usual range is €275 to €1,020 in Germany, €320 to €1,300 in France, CHF 500 to 1,400 in Switzerland and USD 700 to 2,500 in the United States. It depends on whether a whole sealed unit must be remade, the size of the pane and local glazing labour. The door itself is USD 79 to 149. We publish this because it is the number people actually need.

What size does my pet need?

Measure, do not guess from breed. Opening width is the widest point plus 25 mm. Opening height is chest depth plus 25 mm, and 50 mm is more comfortable. The bottom of the opening sits level with the belly, 100 to 150 mm above the floor for most cats. Size for the largest animal in the house and fit for the smallest.

Will it draught, or blow open in wind?

A full brush seal runs the three free edges of the flap; the fourth is the hinge, where a seal is not possible. With a near zero flap to body tolerance that keeps ordinary weather out. In a genuine wind tunnel no flap door of any brand stays shut, and heavier magnets only make the flap too hard for a cat. The answer is an external deflector, or the in-only setting during a storm.

Can I take it with me when I move?

The door, yes. Four screws and it lifts out. The glass stays with the house, so most people leave the pane or have the glazier swap the original back. Worth knowing if you rent, and worth saying to a landlord who is hesitating.
